Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs

What is Get Quilled??

Get Quilled offers the same reliable training you have come to expect from Get Rattled but instead of rattlesnakes, this training will focus on porcupines!!

Our porcupines are currently being socialized and desensitized to dogs and commotions!

We will begin providing this training fall of 2025!

Meet the porcupines!

Ash & Ryder are the newest members of our team.

The are a pair of captive born, bottle raised North American Porcupines.

They were born on April 11th (Ash) & April 12th (Ryder) and moved into our home in May. They will be bottle fed until August but are already weaned and eating solid foods regularly. The bottle feeding just helps us with the bonding process.

If you come to a rattlesnake class, you might get the chance to meet them as we bring them along for the exposure and socialization

Porcupine facts

  • Size: 2–3 feet long, 20–30 pounds as adults

  • Diet: Leaves, bark, buds, twigs, and other vegetation

  • Habitat: Forests, rocky areas, and shrublands across Canada, the northeastern and western regions of the United States, and northern Mexico

  • Defense: Quills, tail swats, and a strong musky warning odor - no wonder dogs find them enticing!!

  • Predators: Fishers, coyotes, bears, wolves, cougars, and birds of prey

Are porcupines deadly?

Yes!

It may not seem like it is such a big deal - remove the quills and you are good to go, right!?!

Well, you would hope so and odds are you would usually be right, however...

Porcupine quills are barbed and those barbs cause the quill to travel! Quill removal is best done by a vet and under general anesthesia to prevent panic and movement from your dog.

If a quill breaks during removal and is not caught it WILL migrate through the tissue and can cause severe complications or even death years later.
